Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation

Our practice is quite unique in Columbia as we offers a wide variety of services to assist patients in recovery from different injuries and illness, that encompass  Orthopedic injuries, complaints and Neurological illness or injuries.

If you did not hear about this field of medicine yet, there are several reasons that may explain that; one is that the core training of a Physiatrist is focused on restoring function after an injury or illness, that leaves almost all training programs affiliated with large academic institutions and Universities, however, both the University of South Carolina-USC-and the Medical University of South Carolina -MUSC– do not even offer the training as it is difficult to recruit physicians in the field  because there are relatively few across the nation.

Rehabilitation physicians are nerve, muscle, bone and brain experts who treat injury or illness non surgically to decrease pain and restore function.

We are active members of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (AAPM&R) which is the national medical specialty society for physiatrist (fizz ee AT trists), physicians who specialize in physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R).

The specialty began in the 1930s to treat musculoskeletal and neurological problems: AAPM&R was founded in 1938. After World War II, as thousands of severely disabled veterans began to return home and look for ways to lead productive lives, the specialty grew rapidly and focused its mission to enhance and restore functional ability and quality of life to those with physical impairments or disabilities.

Throughout the years the field expanded further and encompassed several subspecialties including Pain medicine, Spine Care, Musculoskeletal Medicine, Brain injury Medicine, Spinal Cord Injury Medicine, Stroke Rehabilitation Medicine, Orthopedic Rehabilitation Care.

American Academy Of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (AAPM&R) serves its members and their patients, other health professionals and society by fostering excellence in Physiatry practice, education, and research. AAPM&R has more than 7,000 members, representing nearly 9 in 10 of all practicing PM&R physicians in the United States.
